This research explored the perceptions of 10th and 11th grade students, as well as graduates of the Local Tourism Operations technical program, regarding tourism education as a pedagogical strategy. Using a mixed-methods design, surveys, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups were conducted to identify meanings, values, and learning experiences related to tourism training in secondary education contexts. The results show that participants recognize that tourism education, when integrated with practical experiences, territorial projects, and critical reflections on sustainability, fosters the development of communication skills, collaborative work, and engagement with the local community. However, tensions emerged related to limited curricular integration, the restricted use of active learning methodologies, and a perceived disconnect between technical content and the sociocultural realities of the region. The study concludes that tourism education can enhance meaningful learning and educational relevance if implemented through active, contextualized, and dialogical pedagogical strategies aimed at the holistic development of students. The findings provide elements for rethinking the curriculum and strengthening
