With the passing of the elders of the Black communities in Gamarra Cesar, it has become increasingly difficult to interpret the codes embedded in the “baile cantao” as a form of cultural expression. Objective: To examine cultural identities through the lens of the Black communities settled along the banks of the Magdalena River in the Gamarra Cesar area. Methodology: Qualitative, with a hermeneutic approach; the method of the dancing hermeneutic circle is constructed, based on the movement of the “baile cantao” as a formative teaching tool for the appropriation of knowledge. Results: This study proposes a model of cultural identity that is essential, relational, and diverse, known as “the people of the River,” whose local variants include the cruzao, the settlers of Pacora, and the bagre dancers. Conclusion: In Colombia, research on cultural identities with African roots is scarce; interpreting ancestral codes helps to preserve tradition.
